Censorship is so 1984!
Book bans are real. The escalation in attempts to ban books in libraries, schools, and bookstores around the country has made George Orwell’s cautionary tale 1984 a prescient warning about the dangers of censorship.
The top challenged books of 2024, according to the American Library Association (ALA), were led by All Boys Aren't Blue by George M. Johnson, followed by Gender Queer: A Memoir by Maia Kobabe and The Bluest Eye by Toni Morrison, which was tied with The Perks of Being a Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky. These books were frequently challenged for their LGBTQIA+ content, sexually explicit themes, and depictions of sexual assault, incest, and drug use.
Our featured Lobby display for September highlights the most challenged books of 2024.
There's controversy over the name Hispanic Heritage Month and whether it truly represents the diverse people and cultures it is intended to celebrate. There is even debate over whether it should be Latino, Latinx or Latine. Either way, the sentiment of Hispanic Heritage Month should be to celebrate the culture of millions of Latinx people living in the United States and who embody the American experience. No matter how you identify, we want to create a space to celebrate the contributions of the Latinx community.
The fiction collection we have gathered on the shelf in our Children's section represent just a small snapshot of works by Latinx authors. Enjoy!
For those of us who are J.R.R. Tolkien enthusiasts, September is a time to celebrate and immerse ourselves in his fictional world of Middle Earth. The birthdays of both Frodo and Bilbo Baggins fall on September 22, thus, it makes a perfect day to party like a hobbit! In fact, the date itself has been a fan holiday known as Hobbit Day since the 1970s.
Sept. 22 marks an important date on the Shire calendar. It is the birthday of the hobbits Bilbo and Frodo Baggins, two fictional characters in J. R. R. Tolkien’s popular books The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. In the books, Bilbo and Frodo were born on Sept. 22 — Bilbo in the year 2890 and Frodo in 2968 of the Third Age. Of course, that’s 1290 and 1368, respectively, in Shire-reckoning for die-hard Tolkien fans.
Our display on the Newspaper section shelf features various book and movie editions of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings.
All of the books and media on display are available to check out, and you can view a title list here.
