John Grammer Fellowship - School of Letters

School of Letters

The School of Letters is a summers-focused MFA in creative writing in Sewanee, Tennessee, home to a long-standing literary tradition. Our students come from different backgrounds, locations, and professions, but they all have one thing in common—a desire to be a part of a community of writers.

For six weeks every summer, our students and faculty work and live on our mountaintop campus, immersing themselves in writing and literature. Classes and workshops are both intimate and rigorous, with a supportive and friendly atmosphere. Our weekly reading series features guest authors, faculty, publishers, and students to provide further opportunities outside of the classroom. At the end of the term, students return home energized from the work they've done and looking forward to another summer in Sewanee.

It's time to find your community at Sewanee. We can't wait to meet you.

2024 School of Letters Summer Readings

Every summer the School of Letters invites our acclaimed faculty and other prominent, nationally recognized writers and scholars to read their work and speak about the writing life.

Readings are held at Gailor Hall in the newly-named Naylor Auditorium at 4:30 PM unless otherwise noted, with a reception following in Gailor Atrium. We are pleased this summer to partner with Tower Community Bank, the Blake and Bailey Family Fund, the Friends of the Library, and the Dakin Fund. Most readings are on Wednesday, but note that two events this year are on other days.

In the past few years, this list of prestigious visitors has included Alexander Chee, Kiese Laymon, Danielle Evans, Donika Kelly, Shruti Swamy, Lucy Alibar, Stephanie Pruitt, Caroline Randall Williams, Holly Goddard Jones, Patricia Smith, Ben Fountain, and many others.
