The DDB is Germany’s central, national portal for culture and science. The portal, wholly organized and funded by the public sector, has the ongoing aim of linking up the digitized inventories of Germany’s cultural and scientific institutions and making them available to the public. The DDB is the national data aggregator for Europeana. The DDB is a network of the cultural and scientific institutions in Germany. It enables and encourages them to network, cooperate and to develop and use together services and innovative tools. The German National Library is entrusted with the task of collecting, permanently archiving, bibliographically classifying and making available to the general public all German and German-language publications from 1913, foreign publications about Germany, translations of German works, and the works of German-speaking emigrants published abroad between 1933 and 1945. The German National Library maintains co-operative relations on the national and international level. The Bayerische Staatsgemäldesammlungen (Bavarian State Painting Collections) is the entrusted custodian of a very substantial part of the public art collections belonging to the Free State of Bavaria, as well as the museums in which the artworks are on show: in Munich the Alte Pinakothek, the Neue Pinakothek, the Sammlung Moderne Kunst (located in the Pinakothek der Moderne), the Museum Brandhorst and the Sammlung Schack, as well as an additional thirteen public art galleries spread across Bavaria.
