Home Front, War Front: Sewanee and Fort Oglethorpe in World War I: Charlotte Gailor

Charlotte Gailor

As the second child of Bishop Gailor, Charlotte Gailor grew up in Sewanee and spent most of her adult life here as well. She was a talented artist and a skilled student, eventually winning a scholarship to Vassar. She and her brother Frank were stranded in Paris when war was declared, and after a brief return to the U.S., she traveled back to France to work in various capacities for the Red Cross. Her work included sketching surgical procedures in the military hospitals and searching for missing men whose families had lost contact with them.
